Alexandra graduated BA Equine Business Management and has now gone on to work in the thoroughbred industry, but more specifically is a Nominations Executive for Tweenhills Stud- a stone’s throw from Hartpury. Her job involves sales, marketing, pedigree research, client relations and event organisation with the goal of attracting breeders to nominate mares to their stallions for a fee. It incorporates many of the areas of the industry (breeding, racing and public horse sales) that she has spent time working in since graduating from Hartpury University.
Alenandra's Hartpury Experience
"Hartpury University is well known in the equine world and offers great facilities and degrees that are internationally recognised and tailored to someone hoping to work within the equine industry. I was a dressage rider, so choosing Hartpury University was an easy decision because I could bring my horses with me. I was in the Equine Academy in my first year and the experience strengthened not just my horse and riding skills, but also showed me what it would be like to work with others that shared a common interest.
After graduating with a BA in Equine Business Management from Hartpury University, I knew I was interested in the thoroughbred industry, so I spent time researching and calling industry professionals to try and figure out how to build a career in the sport. I found a mentor almost immediately, who facilitated opportunities for me to experience and gave me a ‘flying start’. The Tattersalls sales in Newmarket were where I first got my foot in the door and attending the sales a few times a year is now almost a religion for me."
Developing Industry Connections
"After Hartpury University, I completed two six-month training programmes in the thoroughbred industry. The first was the Kentucky Equine Management programme in Lexington, Kentucky, during which I was placed at Juddmonte Farms - the world-renowned organisation that bred and now stands Frankel. The second was the Irish National Stud course in County Kildare, Ireland - a course which has trained many of the industry leaders over the years. Following this period of practical training, I worked for two thoroughbred trainers: Francis Henri-Graffard in Chantilly, France, and Gai Waterhouse in Sydney, Australia. I have been fortunate to be able to experience a grand tour of the thoroughbred industry around the world, and have collected invaluable experience and contacts along the way."
