Hartpury College A Level English Language

English Language

A-level

Study spoken and written words, learning how writers use language to evoke emotion, fulfil purposes, reach their audience, and reveal attitudes. The English Language A-Level will equip you with the skills to understand how words and grammatical structures can affect meaning.

Key Information

Course Duration: Two years
Part or Full Time: Full Time
Level of Study: A-levels

Course Overview

Have you ever changed the language you used based on where you are and who you are with? Noticed that men and women interact differently? Wondered how children first learn to speak and write?

English Language is both stimulating and interesting as it allows you a chance to actively engage with everyday language, understand how it works and how it has changed over the centuries and evolved to be spoken around the globe.

You'll be introduced to concepts and methods of the disciplines of English language/linguistics in relation to a wide range of spoken and written forms of English, including digital and multimodal forms.

You will have opportunities to develop your creative writing, study the power of language in politics, business, advertising and comedy and investigate how identity is shaped by a variety of factors including gender and geography.

English Language relates well to all other A-level subjects, particularly English Literature, Psychology, Sociology, PE and Business Studies. As the course involves collecting, presenting and analysing data, the subject would also go well with science subjects like Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Maths.

Studying English Language can open the door to an array of career paths such as:

  • publishing
  • law
  • journalism
  • film/TV production
  • advertising and marketing
  • teaching
  • linguistics
  • politics
  • public relations
  • and human resources.

At Hartpury, we follow the Edexcel English Language specification. For more information, click here.

Our English Language lecturers are also examiners for the relevant exam boards, further enhancing their provision.

GCSE | You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above to include Mathematics and English Language, as well as:

Grade 6 or above in English Language and English Literature.
